This case study covers the 3D design and visualisation workflow for a bespoke built-in study furniture project in Newbury, Berkshire — from client brief through SolidWorks/SWOOD modelling and rendering to CNC-ready production files. and machining.

The Brief
The client, based in Newbury, Berkshire, had recently converted part of their home into a dedicated study and required a bespoke built-in furniture solution. The design included walnut shelving, storage cabinets, and marine blue framed cabinetry, enhanced with integrated LED lighting to create a warm and functional workspace. To ensure the design complemented the room and met the client's expectations, a photorealistic 3D render was produced for approval before manufacture commenced.

Design Process
The project was modelled in SolidWorks/SWOOD to the room's exact dimensions. Material finishes — walnut veneer panels and painted marine blue frame fronts — were applied in the 3D model to produce photorealistic renders, allowing the client to review and approve the design, material selections, and LED lighting layout before production began.
What the 3D Model Delivered
An accurate model built to room dimensions, avoiding surprises on installation
Photorealistic renders showing walnut grain, marine blue framing, and the LED lighting effect
A cutting list and component breakdown generated directly from the model
CNC-ready panel dimensions passed through to production
Outcome
The client approved the design at first render, with no amendments required. Components were manufactured from the model's cutting list and installed to fit the room without on-site adjustment, including the LED lighting, which was integrated exactly as designed.
This project is a good example of how 3D design reduces risk between design and install — what the client approves on screen is what gets built.
